Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is a public university in Pakistan. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees. The University was established on 26 December 1988. AIOU has been ranked eighth best university in the world by the 2024 QS World University Rankings.
The University has an enrollment of over 30,000 students and 300 faculty members. The academic year consists of four semesters with each semester having about 45 weeks duration. Each course consists of 12 weekly lectures and a total of 100 hours examination time. A maximum of 40% marks can be obtained in each subject for a pass mark while 60% marks are required to obtain a distinction award in each subject.
For undergraduate programmes, there are six subjects namely Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, English and Social Sciences which carry a mandatory 35 credits each while for postgraduate programmes there are five subjects namely Economics, Political Science, Law, Computer Science and Business Administration which carry 45 credits each as compulsory courses whereas the remaining three subjects carry 30 credits each as elective courses.
Students who have successfully completed their undergraduate or postgraduate studies with satisfactory grades can apply to be admitted into the PhD programme at AIOU after fulfilling all eligibility requirements such as submission of a dissertation proposal and candidature exam.

Out of total 100 points, a student will be awarded with 50 points in case of A-level examination, 45 points in case of intermediate examination and 40 points in case of undergraduate examination.
